Malta Maritime Museum

The Malta Maritime Museum, located in the historic town of Birgu (Vittoriosa), stands as a testament to Malta’s deep-rooted naval legacy. The museum is housed in a building rich with history, originally the site of the galley arsenale during the rule of the Knights of St John. This arsenal served as the central hub for constructing and maintaining the Order’s fleet of galleys, which played a vital role in defending the island and projecting power across the Mediterranean. Following the arrival of the British in the early 19th century, the site was transformed. In 1844, architect William Scamp designed and oversaw the construction of the Royal Naval Bakery. This vast facility supplied bread and provisions to the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet and stands as a prime example of British military architecture in Malta.
