Ġgantija Temples

The Ġgantija Temples are among the earliest free-standing stone buildings in the world. Notwithstanding their age, the monuments survive in a considerably good state of preservation. Neolithic builders used both locally sourced Globigerina and Coralline Limestone. The site’s two structures have separate entrances and are enclosed within a common outer megalithic wall. Each consists of a number of apses flanking a central corridor. Plaster fragments with red ochre, now displayed at the Interpretation Centre, suggest that the internal walls were plastered and painted.
