Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a unique underground prehistoric burial complex hewn into the living rock. Created and used between about 4000 and 2500 BC, its interconnected chambers extend across three levels. The architecture imitates above-ground temple forms and includes remarkable red ochre decoration. The Hypogeum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Malta’s most exceptional archaeological monuments.
